The Ants and the Grasshopper
蟻群與蚱蜢
A whole colony of ants shares the work of a summer, each doing a small part, and when winter comes the grasshopper learns that it takes many working together, not just one, to see a colony safely through the cold.
The story

Once, on a summer morning, the sun had only just climbed over the grass tips when the anthill was already busy. It stood like a little city of earth, with the queen resting deep inside, while reddish-brown worker ants moved along narrow paths in every direction. Some carried seeds far heavier than themselves, some smoothed the walls of the tunnels, and a few stood watch at the door, looking up for the shadow of a bird. Their steps were small and light, but together they moved like a steady little river.

At noon, when the sun had warmed the meadow through, a grasshopper hopped onto a tall blade of grass and looked down at the busy ants. He could not help singing out to tease them: "Why spend such a fine day on dirt and grain? Come and listen to my song instead!" An older worker ant paused, brushed her antennae, and answered kindly, "Your song is lovely, friend, but the small work each of us does today is tied to everyone's winter. One more seed carried home means one less worry when the cold comes."

The grasshopper only shrugged his wings, thinking the ants were making too much fuss. That afternoon he saw one ant struggling with a large seed, unable to move it alone — and at once two others hurried over to help lift it together. Not long after, last night's rain had washed out part of a tunnel, and the ants on watch called for helpers to carry mud and mend the gap. Each task looked small, and each worker was small too, but together they made the whole hill steadier, day by day.

As evening fell, the queen came out from her deep chamber to remind the younger workers that the storerooms must stay dry, and the grain must be kept in separate, tidy piles so it would not spoil. The young ants nodded and carefully sorted the day's harvest, stacking it neatly away. The grasshopper peeked through the grass and shook his head, certain the ants were being far too careful.
Autumn came, and the wind turned cool, and the grass tips faded to pale gold. The grasshopper still hopped past the anthill each day, watching the ants strengthen their door against the coming cold, and thought only, "Tomorrow will surely be just as warm as today." Then he hopped away, humming his tune.

But winter did not wait long. Overnight, snow covered the whole meadow in white, and a cold wind crept like icy fingers through the dry grass roots. The grasshopper, hungry and shivering, his wings too stiff with cold to lift, dragged himself step by trembling step through the snow until at last he found the warm little door of the anthill. He knocked ever so softly and asked, "Ants... could you spare a little something to eat?"

A soft golden light glowed from inside, where the workers were spreading out the summer's grain to keep it dry for the winter ahead. They did not scold the grasshopper. They welcomed him into the warmth and offered him a few kernels to eat. The old worker ant said gently, "It is not one ant who lives through the winter — it is a whole colony that prepared together." The grasshopper ate slowly by the soft light, and at last he understood: working together is not a loud, cheerful word, but each one doing their own small part, right on time. Outside, the new snow lay quiet and bright under the moon.
Story takeaway
A community grows secure when every member keeps up their own small share of the work; many little efforts, joined together, can carry everyone through a long winter.
Talk together
If everyone in a group only did their own small part well, what might that do for the whole group in the end?
